Most companies needing freelance help these days are LLCs or partnerships. The company could also be a somewhat big organization that’s looking to hire project-based help where the projects may last several months. In most cases, even if it’s someone who is solo hiring, they probably have an LLC that they have as a corporation.
They hire just like any other individual on Upwork. They go on Upwork, post a job, and find the particular freelancers they’re looking for. It’s a seamless process.
